Virgil J. Mattern, 88, of Mascoutah, IL, born Feb. 14, 1937, in Belleville, IL died Thursday, Mar. 20, 2025, at Freeburg Care Center.
Virgil retired from Alton Southern Railroad. He was a member of Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Mascoutah, Knights of Columbus Council #4380 in Mascoutah, and a United States Army veteran. Virgil was an avid card player and a huge Chicago Cubs fan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil A. and Helen A., nee Garbs, Mattern, two brothers, Dennis and Kent Mattern.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Ruth A., nee Dickhaut, Mattern; stepson, Dean (Karen) Roehrig, two grandsons, Ryan (Nicole) Roehrig, Robert (Allison) Roehrig; three great grandchildren, Parker, Reese, and Emmylou; sister, Barbara Klearman; three brothers, James (Barbara) Mattern, Thomas (Kathleen) Mattern, Gary (Sharol) Mattern; brother-in-law, Robert Dickhaut; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

FUNERAL: A funeral service will be held at 10 AM Friday, Mar. 28, 2025, at Moll Funeral Home with Father Mark Stec officiating. Burial will follow in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, IL.
