Richard W. “Dick” Sax, 89, of Mascoutah, IL born Oct. 9, 1928 in Belleville, IL, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Dick was a salesman from Curtis Industries and retired after 50 years of service. He and his wife Margie purchased a business in 1974 in Mascoutah which is called Sax’s. He is a member of Holy Childhood Catholic Church, Mascoutah; he taught religious education at Holy Childhood Parish for many years; he was past Grand Knight, past District Deputy, and member of K of C Council 4380 in Mascoutah; 4 th degree member of Bishop Janssen General Assembly 0199, Belleville; American Legion Post 292, Mascoutah; Mascoutah Evening Lions; past president and member of Mascoutah Chamber of Commerce; member Mascoutah Moose Lodge 815; Mascoutah Historical Society; was very active in the Mascoutah Senior Center; was founder of the Mascoutah Light Box parade; a U. S. Air Force Korean War veteran; and he was instrumental in the installation of the fountains at the Mascoutah Reservoir Park. Dick dedicated his time and talents and was very enthusiastic about his mission trips, both domestic and abroad, including Honduras, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Lesotho. He received the Studs Turkel Humanities Service Award.
Included in Dick’s many talents were painting, wood carving, and he was self taught at the age of 80 to play the accordion. In his later years he enjoyed gardening and his yard work. Dick was everything to his family, and in the words of a close friend, Dick was a “Renaissance Man.”
He is preceded in death by, his parents, John and Estella, nee Hausman, Sax; three brothers, Roland, Robert, and Jack Sax; and four sisters, Virginia Candidus, Jean Middleton, Sister Mary Sax, CPPS, and JoAnn Rule.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret “Margie”, nee Moll, Sax whom he married in Mascoutah, IL on May 25, 1955; five children, Tony (Sue) Sax of Mascoutah, IL, Tom (Cheryl) Sax of Mascoutah, IL, Ann Hale of Maryville, IL, Mary (Paul) Molla of Calhoun, GA, and Sue (Tim) McCool of Niceville, FL; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law; sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: a memorial visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017 at Holy Childhood Catholic Church, Mascoutah, IL.
Funeral: A funeral Mass will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017 at Holy Childhood Catholic Church with Father Paul Wienhoff officiating. In accordance with Dick’s wishes his body was donated to science.
The family will be hosting a celebration of Dick’s life on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the American Legion Home in Mascoutah, IL.
