Joan Ann O'Hara

July 1, 1932 — March 14, 2025

Mascoutah

With hearts full of love, we say goodbye to Joan Ann O’Hara nee Sternagel who passed away peacefully at the age of 92 at the Assisted Living of Silver Creek in Mascoutah, Illinois, on March 14, 2025. She passed amidst a great windstorm and so the Irish blessing came to pass, “the wind was at her back.” She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and an unmistakable wit.

Born in 1932, Joan grew up alongside Joseph Michael O’Hara, the boy next door who would become the love of her life. They married in 1949, embarking on a 72-year journey of devotion, laughter, and Joseph’s signature Irish charm. The twinkle in their eyes for each other never faded. Their love carried them through homes in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida before settling in Illinois, where family and friends felt welcome and cherished.

A lifelong animal lover, Joan had a special place in her heart for her beloved Mae Westie and any dog who would hop up on her lap or ask for a handout.

Much of Joan’s work life was devoted to caring for others as a nurse’s aide before working at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha in housekeeping. She enjoyed ice cream, listening to music, and singing along to her son Bill’s guitar.

Joan’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her sons Michael J. O’Hara and William F. O’Hara (Nancy Larson) and her beloved grandchildren Shannon M. Laehn (Steve), Michelle M. Braatz (LeRoy), James P. O’Hara (Laura nee Donahoe), and great-grandchildren Connor, Jake, Anna, Lucas, Maria, Louie, Loren, Maddie, Olivia, Finn, and Eleanor—all whom she loved beyond measure.

She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin August Sternagel and Florence Emily Sternagel nee Heasley of Youngstown, Ohio, and her brother John “Jack” Sternagel.

The family extends their gratitude to the caregivers at Assisted Living at Silver Creek and Family Hospice, whose kindness and care meant so much in Joan’s final years.

Joan asked to extend her thanks to all her friends at Silver Creek whose treasured companionship was a source of warmth, support, and good humor.

She will be laid to rest and forever reunited with her greatest love, Joe, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

In memory of Joan, cherish your family and loved ones, share a laugh, and remember that love and laughter are life’s greatest gifts. Memorials may be made to the Mascoutah Food Pantry, PO Box 262, Mascoutah, IL 62258.

FUNERAL: A private family graveside service will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO with Rev. Cherie Hambleton officiating.
