Ellen Coffey, nee Pittman, 98, of Fairview Heights, IL, born Dec.10, 1919 in Sweatman, MS, died Thursday, Apr. 5, 2018 at Memorial Care Center in Belleville, IL.
Ellen was a homemaker, and a member of Mt. Eagle Baptist Church in Chicago. She moved to Chicago in 1946 to improve her standard of living. In 1956 she attended the Dunbar Vocational High School in Chicago where she studied English, history, and math. She also studied psychology at the American School. Her career includes employment at Lupin Brothers Paper Company and homemaker for Dr. Warren Johnson (President of the Chicago Sun) for fifteen years.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Greene and Palace, nee McChristain, Pittman; one grandchild, Michael Hines; a son-in-law, Lenwood Hines, 14 brothers and sisters; Maggie, Ulicit, Toni B., Rutha Lea, Ally, Onnie, Greene, Pavie, Otee, Icey Bell, Rosie Lee Pittman, and Jesse, Sarah, and Annie.
Ellen is survived by her daughter, Mildred Hines of Fairview Heights, IL; two grandchildren, Cathy Hines of Belleville, IL and David Hines of O’Fallon, IL; five great-grandchildren, Tunisha Dickey, Michaele Hines, Jasmine Collins, Audrey Hines, and Kaylee Hines; one great-great grandchild Maya Hines, and beloved, numerous nieces and nephews.
