Cathy Jean Monken, 71, of Caseyville, passed peacefully at her home on August 13. She leaves behind a legacy of love.
Cathy was a nurse for over 30 years. Even though she was a professional caregiver, she took her work home with her every night. She brought light, life, joy, and learning to everything she did, not only to the hundreds of mothers and babies she supported through the decades of her career, but to those she helped at CASA, the Zoo, the YMCA, and beyond.
Her husband Alan and sons Josh and Jeremy were her first world. And that first world grew steadily bigger with the addition of her granddaughters Charlotte, Juliette, and Lyra, from whom she took so much joy as she watched them grow. And through all of it, she and her sister Rhonda were each other’s rock and best friend.
She found connection everywhere. From her cousins and relatives, to her oldest friends from Memorial, to her found family at her book and knitting clubs, she was a mother figure, a friend, and one of the sweetest people any of us could know.
Cathy is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Rhonda and John “J” Nunn of Lebanon, her son Josh, daughter-in-law Rachel and granddaughters Charlotte and Juliette of St. Charles, MO, her son Jeremy, daughter-in-law Erica and granddaughter Lyra of Irvine, CA, and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Don and Thelma Cameron and her husband Alan Monken.
In lieu of flowers, hug a loved one, tell them how much you care, and give them a great book to read. For donations in her memory, please give to Lebanon Matthew Ministries Food Pantry, 108 E. Dee St., Lebanon, IL 62254.
