Carol J. Flannery (born Cologera Josephine Pumilio to John and Frances [LoMedico] Pumilio on 6 Mar. 1942, in Frankfort, NY) passed away on 4 Jan., 2025, at Marka Nursing Home in Mascoutah, IL. The family wishes to thank Marka’s staff for the diligent care they provided her and to Moll Funeral Home for their compassion while planning her memorial.
Carol met Joseph Flannery (deceased 10 Apr. 2024) in Rome, NY, while attending a radio event. They married in Sept. 1967, after Joe returned from Vietnam. They moved to Mississippi where their daughter Mary (Bloomington, IL) was born about 13 months later and then welcomed their son Frank (Waterloo, IL) the following Oct. Throughout Joe’s Air Force career, Carol transformed every military housing unit into a home.
In addition to her children, Carol is survived by: brother Fred (Arlene) Pumilio; brother Mario (Carla) Pumilio; daughter-in-law Mickie Flannery; grandson Kristian Flannery; step grandchildren, Paige Stumpf, and Devin (Kyle) Henderson; step great grandchildren, Archie and Max Henderson; and, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Carol laughed freely, loved deeply, and cooked wonderfully. She prioritized her family always and sacrificially. She was creative. When the family lived on Hickam AFB, she would paint Christian themes every Christmas on our windows. She learned macramé and basic Asian cooking there, too.
She started her employment as a secretary and later created newspaper ads. Carol also worked behind the deli counter at Tom’s IGA and in the Holy Childhood’s school kitchen.
She was a parishioner at Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church and member of the Mascoutah and Swansea Rotary Club.
Please consider memorializing Carol by donating to: American Diabetes Association; Mascoutah Rotary Club; Swansea Rotary Club; Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church; or Our Lady Queen of Apostles (Frankfort, NY).
