Anthony J. “Skins” Ortiz, Sr., 83, of Fairmont City, IL born June 8, 1940, in East St. Louis, IL died Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at St. Louis University Hospital.
Tony was a loving husband and father, being married to his wife, Jeanie for 63 years. He retired, after 40 years from working at an aluminum plant in Venice, Illinois.
Tony was a gregarious, fun-loving family man. With his quick-witted humor, he could easily entertain those around him. He enjoyed playing sports in his youth and was an avid fan of the St. Louis Blues, Cardinals, and the Oklahoma Sooners college football team. He enjoyed playing music when he was young at the “Mexican Hall” in Fairmont City. Tony had a passion for golf throughout his adult life and was always eager to play a round with family and friends. Tony was one of the original members of the Fairmont City Volunteer Fire Department where he served for 14 years. He loved playing softball and attending cookouts with his fellow firefighters and their families.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Carmen, and Josephine, nee Navis, Ortiz, stepfather, Angel Sierra, brother, Angel “Beco” Sierra, two sisters, Carmelita, and Elena Ortiz.
Tony is survived by his wife, Lois Jeanie, nee Kugler, Ortiz; four children, Lupe (Scott) Waldrup, Anthony Ortiz, Jr., Theresa (Charles) Merritt, Tina (Kenny) Smith; 11 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; brother, Frankie (Rosemary) Ortiz; and a sister, Mary Lou Barron.
