Hildur "Dia" Bauer

Hildur “Dia” Bauer, nee Vilhjalmsdottir, 85, of Belleville, IL, born Dec. 27, 1930 in Hafnir, Iceland, died Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

Dia worked as a hair stylist for Jeanette Surmeier in Mascoutah, IL and later owned and operated Dia’s Salon in Bunker Hill, IL.  She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Bunker Hill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vilhjalmur Magnusson and Astridur Thorarinsdottir; her husband Paul Bauer, a grandson, Travis L. Griffin; two brothers, Ketill Vilhjalmsson, and Gardar Mar Vilhjalmsson.

She is survived by three children, Vilhjalmur “Willie” (spouse Johanna) Nikulasson of Keflavik, Iceland, Donald F. (spouse Christine) Herwick III of Belleville, IL, and Rebecca L. Herwick of Hill City, SD; five grandchildren, Asthildur Agustsdottir, Donald F. Herwick IV, Jesse E. Herwick, James Stratman, and John Stratman; seven great-grandchildren, Jaelynn Kraayvanger, Elijah Griffin, Donnie F. Herwick V, Faida Herwick, Laila Herwick, Brynja Jonsdottir, and Bryndis Jonsdottir; and a brother, Jon Bjorn Vilhjalmsson and wife, Margret Elimarsdottir of Reykjavik, Iceland.

Hildur’s wishes were to have memorials donated to her church, Kirkjuvogskirkja, Hofnum, Iceland, and as a result the family would appreciate cash donations be made.
