Marcella Catherine Wilhelm, nee Albers, 88, of Mascoutah, born Dec. 24, 1926 near Germantown, IL, peacefully passed away on Sept. 15, 2015 with family by her side at Mar-Ka Nursing Home.
Marcella was the last living member of the family of Joseph and Elizabeth, nee Budde, Albers. She was preceded in death by Roman J. Wilhelm, her husband of 60 years whom she married on Sept. 1, 1949 in Germantown, IL; two sons, Kevin and Brian; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Eleanor & Lawrence Kohlbrecher, Catherine and Arnold Klosterman, Leona and Henry Bach, Marie and Alvin Sparks, and Margaret and Vince Pollmann; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Herman and Catherine Albers, Aloysius and Alvina Albers, and Eugene Albers; Wilhelm brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Preston Blake, Joseph Wilhelm, Meinard Wilhelm, Erwin and Delores Wilhelm, Eunice Wilhelm, Herbert Wilhelm, Bruce Markwardt, and Alice Wilhelm.
Children of farming families, Marcella and Roman lived in Mascoutah for most of their married life. They were members of Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church. Marcella was a member of the St. Ann’s Altar Sodality and the Mother’s Club. In addition to raising her children, Marcella worked at a variety of food service positions culminating as a cafeteria worker at Mascoutah High School. In retirement she and Roman traveled and served in a variety of volunteer services in the Mascoutah area. Marcella loved her family, quilting, euchre, and ‘her’ Cardinals – when they won. Otherwise they belong to Bob and Dale. She willingly sacrificed much so that her children could be cared for, educated (Marcella and her siblings were educated in a one-room schoolhouse), and enjoy the life she often denied herself. In her later years, Marcella lived in Belleville, IL and last resided at the Mar-Ka Nursing Home in Mascoutah.
Marcella is survived by her one daughter Diane (Ernest) Wilson of Scottsdale, AZ; and three sons: Robert (Janet) Wilhelm of San Antonio, TX; Al Wilhelm of Santa Cruz, CA; and Dale Wilhelm of St. Charles, MO; five grandchildren, Ben Wilhelm, Erin Wilhelm, Chuck (Ashley) Wilhelm, Galen & Ariana Wilhelm, five great grandchildren, Joseph, Dylan, Andrew, Trinity and Tommy Wilhelm, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Leo Wilhelm, Marcel Wilhelm, Ralph & Ruth Wilhelm, Delores Wilhelm, Martha & John Henrichs, Sr. Janet (Helen Wilhelm), Rose Markwardt, Ann & Phil Sherry, Darlene Wilhelm, Darlene Schaperkoetter, and innumerable nieces and nephews.
The family thanks all those who provided loving care for mom in her last years, especially the staff of Mar-ka Nursing Home and Hospice of Southern Illinois.
In lieu of all other gifts, memorials can be made to Holy Childhood Catholic Church Memorial Improvement Fund, or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
