John W. Mayes

John W. Mayes, 93, of Mascoutah, IL, born Jan. 1, 1922 in Diamond, WV, died Tuesday, Mar. 24, 2015 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL.

John served in the U. S. Navy from 1941 to 1946 and in the U. S. Naval Reserves from 1946 to 1951 before joining the U. S. Air Force in 1951. He was on active duty until his retirement as Staff Sergeant in 1964 and then worked as an aircraft mechanic at SAFB in Civil Service from 1967 before retiring in 1980. He was a member of St. Martin of Tours Lutheran Church in Mascoutah; the Illinois Pilot’s Association; and the American Legion Post 292 of Mascoutah. He was a WWII Navy veteran and a Korean War Air Force veteran. John enjoyed dancing, boating, and travelling in his RV.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard G. and Grace, nee Hayes, Mayes; a great-granddaughter, Melinda Cheney; two brothers, Howard and Robert Mayes; and a sister, Ruth Rodriguez.

He is survived by his wife, Doris B., nee Bowman, Mayes whom he married in Catlettsburg, KY on Nov. 8, 1947; two children Rebecca Wachtman of Belleville, IL, and Howard (Karen) Mayes of St. Charles, MO; three grandchildren, Leigh Andrea (Austin) Cheney of Charleston, IL, Patricia Lynn Wachtman of Pittsburg, PA, and Matthew Howard (Kara) Mayes of Chesterfield, MO; six great-grandchildren, David, Jaclyn, Matthew, and Nicholas Cheney, and Sophia and Cooper Mayes; and a sister, Elizabeth Bail of Old Lyme, CT.

Visitation : visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Friday, Mar. 27, 2015 at the Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah and from 9 to 10 AM Saturday, Mar. 28, 2015 at St. Martin of Tours Lutheran Church in Mascoutah.

Funeral : funeral services will be held 10 AM Saturday, Mar. 28, 2015 at St. Martin of Tours Lutheran Church in Mascoutah with Pastor Margo Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Mascoutah City Cemetery, Mascoutah, IL.
