Penny Hatsue Carey, 84, of Mascoutah, IL, born Dec. 11, 1930 in Niigata, Japan, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2014 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL.

She was a homemaker and became an American citizen on Oct. 15, 1969. In her early years Penny worked in her family owned grocery store in Niigata, Japan. Penny enjoyed her life serving others. She took care of many children during her lifetime. She had an extended number of friends and was always a gracious host by cooking wonderful Japanese cuisine for them. This brought her great joy.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Takeji and Toshi Hirashima and a son, Christopher Carey.

She is survived by her husband, Dale L. Carey whom she married at the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan on April 20, 1964; a step-mother, two brothers, three sisters, all living in Japan; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard (Pam) Carey of North Little Rock, AR; many nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

In lieu of all other gifts memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation: visitation is from 4 to 7 PM Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014 at the Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah, IL.

Funeral: a memorial service will be held 7 PM Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014 at Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah.
