Cordelia Leota Scanlan, nee Ursprung, of Venedy, IL born Sept. 26, 1921 in Worden, IL. passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Coulterville Care Center, Coulterville, IL.
She graduated from Staunton High School in 1940 and began her work career at Western Cartridge Co. in Alton, IL and then worked as a mine clerk at Worden Coal Co. She and her husband moved to Venedy in 1946 when they and Edward’s brother and sister-in-law took over the operation of Venedy Coal Co. She spent the next 23 years as mine clerk and bookkeeper for the coal company. Leota was a homemaker and loved having her granddaughters stay with Mama and Papa. Many happy hours were spent with her family for Sunday dinner. She loved to play and watch softball and basketball. She was a member of the Worden Methodist Church and an associate member of UMWA Local 1820.
Leota was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Wm. Scanlan whom she married Jan. 8, 1943 and who died Jan. 28, 2011, her parents William and Caroline, nee Schuette, Ursprung, her brothers and sisters and their spouses, William (Mary) Ursprung, Elmer Ursprung, Esther Ursprung, Viola (Martin) Wiese, Henrietta (Fred) Kessmann, Emil Ursprung, Gertrude (Ralph) Wohlert, Emma (Walter) Soltermann, Verna Mae (George) Miller, Vern (Naomi) Ursprung, and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Ursprung.
Surviving are her children, Janice Scanlan of Collinsville, IL, Gerald (Kathleen) Scanlan of Venedy, IL, Marilyn (Robert) Castens of Mesa, AZ; her granddaughters, Khristine (Christopher) Kozlov of Libertyville, IL, Lisa K. Scanlan of St. Louis, MO, Karen Castens of Chicago, IL; a brother, Ray Ursprung of Alton, IL; and nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation: from 4 to 8 PM Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah, IL.
Funeral: funeral services will be held 10 AM Monday, May 12, 2014 at Moll Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis Price officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery, Worden, IL.
