Joseph B. Schmersahl

Joseph B. Schmersahl, 81, of Swansea, IL, born July 27, 1932 in Lively Grove, IL, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2014 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Belleville, IL.

Joe enjoyed spending time with his family and especially was fond of fishing. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Lively Grove, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerhard and Anna, nee Grobe, Schmersahl; four brothers, Edmund (Josephine), Raymond (Vernice), Lawrence (Margie), and Albert Schmersahl; two sisters, Sister Benigna Schmersahl A.S.C., and Dolores (Tony) Mueller; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Buss.

He is survived by one brother, Michael (Dorothy) Schmersahl of Lively Grove, IL; two sisters, Eleanor Buss of St. Libory, IL, and Mary Ann (Stanley) Povolish of Nashville, IL; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Schmersahl of Nashville, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made in the form of masses or to any charity of the donors’ choice.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014 and from 9 to 10:30 AM Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Lively Grove, IL. A prayer service will be held 4 PM Wednesday at the church.

Funeral: A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Lively Grove, IL with Father Dennis Voss officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery, Lively Grove, IL.
