Herbert A. Ballard, 85, of Mascoutah, IL, born April 1, 1923 in Leominster, MA, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 in Collinsville, IL at the home of his son, Tim.


Herbert was a retired MSgt. from the U. S. Air Force and a retired communications contract officer from Civil Service. He was a member of the Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Mascoutah, IL, past member of the Mascoutah Evening Lions Club, former member of the Mascoutah Zoning Board, and a WWII Navy veteran.


He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean L., nee Crowley, Ballard whom he married in Leominster, MA on Feb. 7, 1953 and who died Jan. 5, 2002; his parents, Arthur H. and Mary E., nee McGuire, Ballard; a sister, Loretta Flaherty; and a brother, Daniel Ballard.


He is survived by two sons, Daniel J. (Barbara J.) Ballard of Stanton, MO, Timothy A. (Norma S.) Ballard of Collinsville, IL; a daughter, Mary E. Ballard of Huntington, NY; five grandchildren, Toni Arneson of Champlin, MN, Michael P. Ballard of Riverview, FL, Dustin W., Ryan M., and Sean A. Ballard of Collinsville, IL; three great grandchildren, Justin C. Ballard of Riverview, FL, Caleb A. Arneson of Champlin, MN, and Caden T. Ballard of Collinsville, IL; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert J. (Margaret) Crowley of Lancaster, MA, and Sheila (Peter) Bertucio of Wethersfield, CN; nieces and nephews.


Memorials may be made to Holy Childhood Memorial Improvement Fund or to Belleville Family Hospice.


Visitation: friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 at the Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah, IL. A prayer service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.


Funeral: a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 at Holy Childhood Catholic Church, Mascoutah, IL with Msgr. Jerome Hartlein officiating. Burial will be in Holy Childhood Catholic Cemetery, Mascoutah, IL.
