Stanley Francis “Hack” Haas, 81, of St. Libory, IL, born Sept. 15, 1928 in Mascoutah, IL, died on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Elsie, nee Wombacher, Haas, three brothers, Urban, Cyril and Richard Haas, two brothers-in-law, Ralph Schmitz and William Busch, two sisters-in-law, Ruth Haas and Carol Wennemann and a nephew, Scot Wennemann.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane, nee Wennemann, Haas of St. Libory, whom he married on Nov. 25, 1954; his two children, Nancy and Doug Haas, both of Belleville; his sister, Sylvia Busch; sisters-in-law, Mary (Norm) Becherer, Nita (Dolph) Barker, Betty Haas and Esther Schmitz; brothers-in-law, Bob (Carol) Wennemann and Jim (Sue) Wennemann; numerous nieces and nephews and his unofficially adopted granddaughter, Lindsay Otten.
Mr. Haas was a retired school teacher, having taught 35 years in the Mascoutah School District and three years in the Salem school system. He coached numerous sports during his teaching career. He was a graduate of Mascoutah High School and received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education from Southern Illinois University. During the summer he was employed by Robert Fritz Distributing in Mascoutah.
Stanley was a longtime member of St. Liborius Church in St. Libory. He was an Army veteran who served in the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post 683, St. Libory for over 50 years. He was a past commander of the American Legion, Service Officer for many years, and Chaplain and was a delegate to the Veteran’s Assistance Advisory Committee of St. Clair County.
Stan bowled in numerous bowling leagues and was a member of the 700 Club at Mascoutah Community Bowling Lanes. He pitched horseshoes in the Nu-Deal Horseshoe League. Nothing thrilled him more than beating one of the younger guys at a game of horseshoes. Stanley founded a women’s softball league in St. Libory and also ran a summer sports program for the youth of St. Libory. He was also an avid sports fan, enjoying all St. Louis professional sports teams. One of the most memorable days of his life was the day he caught two foul balls at a Cardinal game at Busch Stadium.

Visitation: friends may call from 4 to 8:30 PM Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009 at the Moll Funeral Home in St. Libory, IL and Thursday, Dec. 3 from 9 to 10:20 AM at St. Liborius Church. A prayer service will be held 4 PM at the funeral home.
Funeral: a funeral mass will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 at St. Liborius Church in St. Libory, IL with Rev. Dennis Voss officiating. Burial will be in St. Liborius Catholic Cemetery.
