Margaret C. Schlichter

October 4, 1918 — January 18, 2011

Margaret C. Schlichter, nee Bechtoldt, 92, of Mascoutah, IL, born Oct. 4, 1918 in Belleville, IL, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, IL surrounded by her family.


Margaret married her husband, Olyn R. Schlichter, of Mascoutah, IL in April 1944. They made their home in Mascoutah where they raised their family of five children. Margaret most enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very supportive of her children’s activities while they were growing up, whether she was cheering at sporting events, helping with 4-H projects, attending school events, going over homework or making elaborate Halloween costumes. She was a member of Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Mascoutah where she served as the program chair of the St. Ann’s Altar Sodality for over 30 years. She will be remembered for her enthusiasm, wit and creativity in carrying out that position. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and active in the Holy Childhood Church’s Mother’s Club.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Olyn, who died in 1990; parents, Joseph and Agnes, nee Cordie, Bechtoldt; a sister, Loretta Haas; and a grandson, Jason Rhodes.


Surviving are her children, Ellen (Mark) Rhodes of Mascoutah, IL, Jerry (Sue) Schlichter of St. Louis, MO, Susan (Terry) Shelton of St. Louis, MO, John (Michelle Long) Schlichter of Belleville, IL, Mary (Paul Didier) Schlichter of Seattle, WA; nine grandchildren, Steve (Allison) Rhodes, David Rhodes, Andrew (Pamela) Schlichter, Joe Schlichter, David Schlichter, Lorry (Darren) Hagen, Justin Schlichter, Danielle Schlichter and Asher Didier; five great-grandchildren, Veronica and Natalie Rhodes, and Abby, Zach and Mary Rhodes; One brother, Joseph (Delores) Bechtoldt; three sisters, Mildred Hulliung, Delores Deeke and Helen Bechtoldt; one sister-in-law, Eleanore Schlichter; other extended family and friends.


Memorials may be made to the Holy Childhood Memorial Improvement Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.


Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 9 PM on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011 at the Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah, IL. A prayer service will be held at 5 PM Friday at the funeral home.


Funeral: A funeral Mass will be held 10 AM Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Mascoutah with Rev. Von Deeke officiating. Burial will be in Holy Childhood Catholic Cemetery, Mascoutah, IL.
