Edward William "Pat" Scanlan

Edward William “Pat” Scanlan, 90, of Venedy, IL, born Sept. 30, 1920 in Worden, IL, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at Coulterville Care Center, Coulterville, IL.


Mr. Scanlan retired in 1993 as an Electric Hoisting Engineer at Peabody Coal Co., Baldwin mine. He began his mining career at Klondike Coal Co. at Worden Illinois in 1937. Upon graduating from Staunton High School in 1940, he went to work at the Western Cartridge Co. in East Alton, IL. After a few years he returned to his family tradition of mining for a 53 year career. During that time he worked at mines in Worden, Venedy, Freeburg, Carlinville, and Marissa, IL. He was also certified and appointed as a Federal Mine Inspector in Central Illinois in 1970-1971, but he left to return to coal mining at Monterey Coal #1 in Carlinville, IL. He was a 70 year member of the United Mine Workers and was currently a member of United Mine Workers Local 1148.


Edward was a past member of the Venedy School Board, Venedy Village Board, Venedy Picnic Committee, Venedy Fire Department, Okawville Lions Club, Okawville Community Club, and the National Association of Power Engineers. He had the honor of being the First Vice President of the Venedy Sportsmen’s Club Inc., which he helped to form in 1955, and was presently an honorary member. He also helped bring dial telephones to Venedy with the founding of the Egyptian Telephone Cooperative, where he was the First Vice President from 1955-1958, and he served on the Board of Directors until 1976.


Edward was an avid squirrel hunter and loved taking his granddaughters mushroom hunting.


He was the youngest child of Patrick H. and Docia Ann (Dolly Crutchfield) Scanlan. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his four brothers, Driscoll O., Gleason C., Lowal R., and Wendell P. Scanlan; and a sister, Trula V. (Scanlan) Stoddard.


He is survived by his wife, Cordelia Leota, nee Ursprung, Scanlan who he married in Clayton, MO on Jan. 8, 1943; three children, Janice D. Scanlan of Collinsville, IL, Gerald D. (Kathleen Mueller) Scanlan of Venedy, IL, and Marilyn D. (Robert I.) Castens of Okawville, IL; three grandchildren, Khristine (Christopher) Kozlov of Libertyville, IL, Lisa Scanlan of St. Louis, MO, and Karen Castens of Chicago, IL; a sister-in-law, Mary Scanlan Keyser; and a brother-in-law, Ray Ursprung; along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends.


Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc., or the Worden Community Park.


Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at the Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah, IL.


Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 at the Moll Funeral Home with Jim Rees officiating. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery, Worden, IL.
