Elva (Schaefer) Schalk, nee Hommel, 97, of Mascoutah, IL, born May 13, 1913 in Mascoutah, IL, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011 at MarKa Nursing Home in Mascoutah.
Elva was retired from Martha Manning Dress Factory in Mascoutah; member of Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Mascoutah; Holy Childhood Council of Catholic Women; Mascoutah VFW Auxiliary Post 7682; and active in the Mascoutah Senior Services Program for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gustave and Mary, nee Rist, Hommel, her husband, Fred C. Schalk whom she married in Dixon, IL on Oct. 15, 1977 and who died Mar. 15, 1989; a son, Dennis Schaefer; two brothers, Francis “Gus” and Carl Hommel; and two sisters, Lucille Bozada and Marie Hommel.
She is survived by two sons, Jim (Sue) Schaefer of Des Peres, MO, and Jerry (Judi) Schaefer of Sterling, IL; four stepchildren, Lou Ann Phillips, Phyllis (Jerry) Morris, Linda (Gerald) Krause, and Fred T. Schalk; stepdaughter-in-law, Melodie Schalk; six grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Morton of McAllen, Texas; sister-in-law, Evelyn Hommel of Mascoutah, IL; nieces and nephews.
In lieu of all other gifts, memorials may be made to the Holy Childhood Memorial Improvement Fund, or Mascoutah Senior Service Program.
Visitation: friends may call from 5 to 8 PM Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at the Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah. A prayer service will be held at 5 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
Funeral: a funeral mass will be held 10 AM Thursday, Mar. 3, 2011 at Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Mascoutah with Msgr. Jerome Hartlein officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Childhood Catholic Cemetery, Mascoutah, IL.
