John F. "Smity" Schmitt

January 7, 1937 — February 20, 2012

John F. “Smity” Schmitt, 75, of Mascoutah, IL, born Jan. 7, 1937 in St. Louis, MO, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 at his residence.


John and his brother, Conrad Jr., owned and operated Schmitt Printing Co. in St. Louis from 1973 to 2004 after they purchased it from their father, Conrad Sr., who started the business in 1927. He was a member of Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Mascoutah, IL; a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4380; and served in the National Guard and Army Reserves. John enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.


He is preceded in death by his parents, Conrad John and Margaret, nee Loeffler, Schmitt, Sr.; a brother, Conrad John “Bud” Schmitt, Jr., and a sister, Mary Ann Heiligmann.


John is survived by his wife, Marjorie J., nee Davis, Schmitt who he married in St. Louis, MO on Apr. 27, 1957; two daughters, Leslie (Steven) Jones of St. Libory, IL, and Teresa (Scott) Walsh of Okawville, IL; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rose Bullas of St. Louis, MO, Marge Johnson of Festus, MO; and Joan Gebke of Bartelso, IL; two brothers, Robert (Mary) Schmitt of Maryland Heights, MO, and Joseph (Becky) Schmitt of Trenton, IL; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.


In lieu of all other gifts memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, or the American Diabetes Assn., or to Heartland Hospice.


Visitation: will be held from 1 to 5 PM Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 at the Moll Funeral Home, Mascoutah, IL.


Funeral: memorial services will be held at 5 PM Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 at Moll Funeral Home in Mascoutah with Msgr. Jerome Hartlein officiating.
